Ali Akbar Moradi Ensemble

Join us for an evening of excellence with the captivating performance of the Tanbour Mastero: Ali Akbar Moradi accompanied by his incredible ensemble. According to the Songlines Magezine, he’s one of the top 50 master musicians in the world, having performed on many world stages.

Born in 1957 in Guran, a region near Kermanshah, he began his journey with the tanbour at the tender age of six, inspired by the encouragement of his grandfather and father. His mentors included Sayyed Hachem, Kafashyan, Sayed Mahmoud Alavi, Ali Mir Darvishi, Allah Morad Hamidi, and Sayyed Vali Hosseyni, under whose guidance he not only mastered the tanbour but also delved into the extensive Kurdish maqam repertoire. Aliakbar played a pivotal role in forming the Shams tanbour ensemble, which is one of the greatest to day, and showcased his musical talents by securing the top prize at the String Instrument Festival in 1991. From 1992 onwards, he delved deeply into researching the ancient maqam of the tanbour, leading to the creation of four CDs and a booklet published in 2002 by Maison des Cultures du Monde.

Throughout his career, Moradi has authored numerous recordings and books, totaling over 23 works, and collaborated with various artists such as Shahram Nazeri, Kaykhosroo pour Nazeri, Kayhan Kalhor, Ardashir and Bijan Kamkar, Pejman Hadadi, Erdal Erzanjan, Ulas Ozdemir, Pezhham Akhavass, Mehdi Bagheri, as well as Arash and Kourosh Moradi, who are currently playing alongside him in the ensemble.

Aside from his scholarly pursuits and performances, Moradi is deeply invested in education, offering tanbour masterclasses in Tehran and Kermanshah. Presently he has established The House of Tanbour in Guran, a cultural center dedicated to preserving the region’s musical heritage. This center not only provides music classes year-round but also hosts annual Tanbour and Kurdish music festivals, ensuring the continuation of the area’s rich cultural legacy.
